TOWNSHIP OF ESQUIMALT MEMORANDUM

MEETING DATE:  March 11, 2024                     Report No. DEV-24-018

TO:                                            Committee of the Whole

FROM:                                           Lisa Yang, Planning Technician

SUBJECT:                      On-line Data Dashboard

INFORMATION:

A dashboard is a type of graphical user interface which provides views of key indicators relevant to a particular objective.  Dashboards are composed of configurable elements, such as maps, lists, charts, gauges, indicators, and tables. Most elements are data driven and represent the information presented to the intended audience.  Dashboards display multiple visualizations on a single screen.

The dashboard of Esquimalt was created using a web-browser-based ArcGIS geoinformation model. Six aspects of information were displayed on the dashboards: Economic, Resident, Household, Dwelling, Workforce, and Livability. The required raw data were obtained from Statistics Canada, Government of Canada, and Victoria Real Estate Board. Subsequently, these data were converted into GIS format using ArcGIS Pro software.  Finally, the six dashboards were combined to provide a comprehensive view of the community.

The dashboard will be updated regularly and will be available to the public at https://www.esquimalt.ca/community-planning-development/planning and https://www.esquimalt.ca/business-development/development.  The dashboard will evolve as new data and technology become available and new user needs are identified.  Development Services will work with the Communications Manager on a robust communications plan to broadly disseminate information about the dashboard to Esquimalt’s citizens and others who would find this information useful.
