BACKGROUND:

A local grant application was received from the Esquimalt High School seeking $5,000 in financial support for students and teachers to attend a robotics competition in Houston, Texas during April 2018.

Esquimalt High School currently receives funding from the Township each year upon approval by Council. The annual amount of $4,800 outlined within Council Policy ADMIN-29 provides amounts for a variety of scholarships and awards, musical instrument purchases as well as athletics team funding.  This request is in addition to the amounts already approved by Council under the Policy and within the 2018 Financial Plan.

ISSUES:

1.  Rationale for Selected Option

The decision regarding any local grant funding allocation is at the discretion of Council.

2.  Organizational Implications

There are no organizational implications of this decision.

3.  Financial Implications

Within the 2017 Financial Plan, an amount of $140,000 was allocated for the purposes of issuing local grants.  To date, local grants totaling $116,225 have been approved with a remaining balance of $23,775 in the account as of the date of this report.  This balance can be used to fund grant requests throughout the 2018 fiscal year.

4.  Sustainability & Environmental Implications

There are no sustainability or environmental implications of this decision.

5.  Communication & Engagement

Whether or not a payment is approved, a letter will be sent to the Esquimalt High School formally advising them of Council’s decision. If a payment is approved, a cheque will be issued and the Local Grant Policy, outlining the reporting requirements, will accompany the letter.

ALTERNATIVES:

2.                     That Council approve local grant funding for an amount less than was requested.

3.                     That Council deny the request for funding.
